FOTD: 'Ombre' Eyes Using Lime Crime Eyeshadows

Hello,

I thought I would share the FOTD from my Babette Review. I haven't really shared a FOTD lately and this is one of Mr PM's favourites. He encouraged me to put it in a post!

So here we go!

Please enjoy my dodgy instagram generated photo! lol

I used the following products:

FACE
  • Illamasqua Matte Primer
  • Illamasqua Skinbase Foundation in #6
  • Napoleon Perdis Camera Finish Powder in N2
BLUSH

  • Lime Crime D'Antoinette Palette - Mercurious (Inner Corner)
  • Lime Crime Aquataenea Palette - Seahorse Discourse (Next Colour)
  • Lime Crime Aquataenea Palette - Atlanteal (Next Colour)

Are there any looks of mine that you would like to see featured? You can see any daily FOTD's I post on Instagram (@polishedmakeup)

PRODUCT COMPARISON: Dual Phase Eye Makeup Removers

In order to have good makeup, it's important that you look after you skin! Taking your makeup off at the end of your day is important so that the day's grime does not sink into your skin overnight! (Though everyone is guilty of sleeping in it at some time... am I right? lol)

This product comparison is on dual phase eye makeup removers - an essential part of a makeup removal routine!

Why dual phase?
I will try not to get too chemistry nerdy here but hopefully this makes sense! Liquids can be either polar or non-polar. Like dissolves like (so polar substances dissolve polar substances but non-polar and polar won't dissolve each other). You know how oil and water don't mix? This is because water is polar and oil is non-polar - they sit together but don't interact (like two socially awkward peeps at a party! lol). This same theory is applied to these makeup removers! By having both polar and non-polar solutions, it means that there is a greater chance of dissolving all those different products that you've put on your eyes! (Think of it this way: water alone won't clean the grease off your stove! Same thing goes for makeup removers!)

I hope I haven't lost you with that chemistry ramble (the joys of being a chemistry major!).

Dual phase removers are good because they are super effective. In one swipe, 90% of my HEAVY eye makeup is removed! The only part that lingers is mascara - but it just takes a little more soaking and elbow grease to dissolve it!

I have five different eye makeup removers (on various stages of rotation) that I have tested and they all get the PM's tick of approval! So it's up to you which you choose!

L-R: Maybelline, Napoleon Perdis, L'Oreal, Clinique, Clarins
Maybelline City Rescue Total Clean
70mL for AUD$6.95 (99c per 10mL)
Perks: Great travel size, also suitable for lips

Napoleon Perdis Auto Pilot Duet Makeup Remover
137mL for AUD$39 ($2.84 per 10mL)
Perks: Proudly paraben free, contains ingredients to soothe the eyes

L'Oreal Gentle Eye Makeup Remover for Eyes & Lips
125mL for AUD$12.95 ($1.03 per 10mL)
Perks: Suitable for sensitive eyes, suitable for lips, opthalmologically tested

Clinique Take The Day Off Makeup Remover
125mL for AUD$35 ($2.80 per 10mL)
Perks: Suitable for lips, fragrance free

Clarins Instant Eye Makeup Remover
125mL for AUD$42 ($3.36 per 10mL)
Perks: Suitable for sensitive eyes, non-stinging

If you are budget conscious, the Maybelline and the L'Oreal are the best options. If you are patient, you may even be able to snare them on sale! (Bargain!) However, the others you could pick up when that brand has a GWP or sale. (For example, I will often buy Clarins when they have a GWP as I also use their skincare!)

While these all work well, my star pick would be the L'Oreal for it's pricepoint and how well it works! (I bought it out of desperation when I had a lippy disaster and I was blown away!)

Hot tip: Make sure you rinse after cleansing - particularly if you want to reapply makeup! And shake them really well before use too!

Have you tried any of these removers? Do you have a favourite?

PM'S TOP FIVE: Napoleon Perdis Colour Discs Eyeshadows

This edition of PM's TOP FIVE covers Napoleon Perdis Colour Discs. I am a huge fan of these eyeshadows and have quite a large collection! (I will get around to swatching them eventually! lol). NP (Napoleon Perdis) eyeshadows are generally more consistent, with colours being highly pigmented, easily blendable, and nice to use. I generally find them better than a lot of MAC ones, which in my experience can be hit or miss (maybe that's mostly because I've used LE/Mineralize ones). The NP colour discs come in a clear plastic compact and have a little mirror under the lid. While the mirror adds glam, I do find it a bit pointless as you can't really see much with it - I have never used them (could be handy on the go I guess?).

Anyway, here are my top five eyeshadow picks!:

My Napoleon Perdis Top 5 Eye Shadows
Top (L-R): Amazon Jungle, All That Shiraz
Middle: Violet #14
Bottom (L-R): Queen of the Night, Green Living

(L-R): Amazon Jungle, All That Shiraz, Green Living, Queen of the Night, Violet #14

Amazon Jungle: A matte nudey-peach with a touch of sparkle (you can see glitter in the pan but luckily it doesn't really translate). A great colour for blending in the crease! It looks a bit unexciting in the pan, but goes on really nice! It was actually used on me by one of the NP makeup artists when I had my makeup done one day and I really liked it! It was used in conjunction with Premium Denim (Navy) and Jaded Genie (Green) and looked fantastic! I am glad it got used on me because it's not one I would have picked by choice. It would also double as a nice blush if need be!

All That Shiraz: This colour I only picked up a few weeks ago but it has already cemented its place as one of my favourites. It is a shimmering wine colour (hence the name I guess) with brown undertones. It leans more brown when blended out so it makes a nice everyday colour that is interesting and great with green eyes.

Green Living: A nice warm mid-brown with a gold shimmer. The shimmer isn't as strong out of the pan but it's still got a nice warmth about it! If you wear browns this is a good go-to! A good brown to add a touch of glam to your everyday look.

Queen of the Night: A really intense matte black that doesn’t give you the fallout that other blacks usually do! It doesn’t take a lot of effort to layer it up to a really nice black. It also makes for a fabulous smoky eye with MAC’s Blackground Paint Pot! It was actually a bit dry to swatch, and does look a little more patchy than I was expecting. However, credit to Napoleon, QOTN and Violet were the same consistency.
Violet #14: This is an old school colour disc from before NP changed all their eyeshadow packaging. I feel a bit bad for including it (because you can't get it anymore unless it pops up in a sale) but this is seriously one of my faves! It is a really nice, deep matte purple (when NP updated their range, they seemed to drop most of their mattes and there is only a handful available now). It doesn't look super purple when blended out, but it makes my green eyes pop too. If you have green eyes, I definitely recommend you try and find something similar (if I ever stumble across something I will be sure to put it in a dupe test!). I have worn it with black and nude shadows on my lid and it looks really good!!

NP Colour Discs retail for $29 for 2.5gms (not too bad value wise) and can be purchased from www.napoleonperdis.com, or from David Jones stores and selected chemists/salons.

Do you use Napoleon Perdis eye shadows? If so, what is your favourite colour?

FOTD: Illamasqua Speckled Liner

Hello,

Today I am sharing a FOTD with you. Since it was released with the I'Mperfection collection, I have admired Illamasqua's Speckled Eyeliner technique. Until now, I have not attempted it as I have not been overly confident with eyeliner. Looking at this (dodgy phone) photo I would say this is one of my best eyeliner attempts yet!

I used the following products:

FACE
  • Illamasqua Matte Primer
  • Illamasqua Skinbase Foundation in #6
  • Napoleon Perdis Camera Finish Powder in N2
BLUSH
  • MAC Mineralise Skinfinish in Stereo Rose
EYES
  • MAC Eyeshadow in Satin Taupe (Crease)
  • Bare Minerals Eyeshadow in Nude Beach (Lid)
  • Napoleon Perdis Loose Eye Dust in Mosaic Gold (Highlight)
  • Napoleon Perdis Mesmer-Eyes Mascara
  • Napoleon Perdis China Doll Gel Liner in Equinox
  • Illamasqua Precision Ink in Scribe
  • Eyebrows: Illamasqua Eyebrow Cake in Gaze
  • Lashes: Lash Republic's 'The Hunter' (these are definitely my favourite lashes!)
LIPS
  • MAC Lipstick in Embrace Me
The key to this look is the Precision Inks in Abyss (Black) and Scribe (White)! If you are keen, you can play around and use different colours (gold instead of white for example!). Either way, I feel liquid eyeliners would work best! (for the spots at least anyway!). Because the liner is reasonably simple, I paired it with a bright lip for a bit more interest.

There is a great tutorial for Speckled Eyeliner on the Illamasqua website which you can view here if you are interested!

Have you tried the Speckled Eyeliner? Do you want to?

What I've Been Up To...

Hello,

It has been a while since my last blog post. Sorry if you have been hanging on the edge of your seat for a new one (just be glad you weren't holding your breath! lol). Anyway, I haven't lost my enthusiasm for blogging (I have still been thinking about plenty of posts, looks and comparisons!) but I have just been caught up in non-interwebz events so my time to get posts done has been at a premium. Luckily, my activities are makeup related so I can share them with you! (I could probably share non-makeup related ones with you too but you may find those not as interesting!).

For the past month or so I have been on the makeup team helping out with my local theatre's production of "Hairspray". This was super exciting for me as I love playing with makeup, I love to learn and what better way to do that than help out in the theatre?! YAY. My makeup knowledge is quite small, and theatre even smaller, but I was lucky because the looks I had to do were glamour related (fancy every-day makeup basically) so I didn't feel too out of my comfort zone! I felt I could also push my personal makeup a little bit, because I was backstage at the theatre (not really in public) and around a bunch of creative people who would probably appreciate it anyway! Because the makeup was for stage, it had to be a bit brighter here and a bit bigger there (so I'm probably going to overdo all my makeup now! haha). My biggest challenges were time constraints (lots of people to do and only a short amount of time to get them all done) and eyeliner (yes, eyeliner!). Eyeliner was a bit of a challenge as it's something I usually tend to avoid on me, let alone trying to get it on other people. Repetition paid off though and by the end of it I feel a lot more confident putting on eyeliner and sticking on eyelashes. Awesome!

All in all, my first help-out in theatre was a success! I have definitely learnt alot of handy tips, had lots of practise and met some awesome people too! It was also a really proud moment to see every one's efforts pay off on the big stage (I got to watch one night and it was FANTASTIC!). I even won the raffle at the cast & crew party so I have a flag to mark the occasion! WOOHOO!

I even did my own little "Hairspray" inspired makeup look one night:

Eyes Closed
Eyes Open

Sorry the photo is the world's worst (thank you yellow-toned and dim theatre lighting! lol).
I used the following products:

FACE
  • Illamasqua Matte Primer
  • Illamasqua Skinbase Foundation in #6
  • Napoleon Perdis Camera Finish Powder in N2
BLUSH
  • MAC Blush in Hot Nights
EYES
  • MAC Eyeshadow in Satin Taupe (Crease)
  • MAC Eyeshadow in Aquadisiac (Lid)
  • Napoleon Perdis Loose Eye Dust in Mosaic Gold (Highlight)
  • Napoleon Perdis Mesmer-Eyes Mascara
  • Napoleon Perdis China Doll Gel Liner in Equinox
  • Eyebrows: Illamasqua Eyebrow Cake in Gaze
  • Lashes: Lash Republic's 'The Hunter' (I think that's what they were...)
LIPS
  • MAC Lipstick in Feel My Pulse
Feel My Pulse lipstick and Hot Nights blush are part of MAC's new Temperature Rising collection, which was released here in Aus on the 3rd of June. If you are quick, you might still be able to get your hands on these items... When I looked at the website last night they were still available! :)

I hope you haven't missed me too much and I have more posts to come soon!

FOTD: Fancy Function!

Hello,

Last week I went to a function and I thought I would share the makeup look that I did for the occasion! (Sorry they are dodgy phone photos but you'll still get the idea!)

My dress was orange lace over beige so I didn't want to go too gun-ho with colour! I chose a co-ordinating bright lip because I like to be matchy like that! haha. The end result made me feel very glam!

I used the following products:

FACE
BLUSH
  • NARS Blush in Deep Throat
  • MAC Mineralize Skin Finish in Stereo Rose (on apples of cheeks only)
  • Napoleon Perdis Contour Palette (brown contour only)
EYES
  • Bare Minerals Eyeshadow in Nude Beach (applied damp with MAC Fix+)
  • Sleek i-Divine in Original (brown-y colours used)
  • Napoleon Perdis Loose Eye Dust in Mosaic Gold
  • Napoleon Perdis Mesmer-Eyes Mascara
  • Napoleon Perdis China Doll Gel Liner in Equinox
  • MAC Pearlglide Eyeliner in Black Swan
  • Eyebrows: Illamasqua Eyebrow Cake in Vehement
  • Lashes: Lash Republic's 'The Hunter'
LIPS
  • MAC Lipstick in Ablaze
There you have it! I hope this serves as inspiration next time you are having a night out!

FOTD: Glam With Red Lips

Hello,

Another FOTD from last weekend here! I felt like going glam last sunday and wore a pretty dress to match! Once again, it's dodgy picture quality (thanks to the phone!).

I used the following products:

FACE
  • Illamasqua Matte Primer
  • Illamasqua Skinbase Foundation in #6
  • Illamasqua Skinbase Foundation in #1 (for blending into neck)
  • Napoleon Perdis Camera Finish Powder in N2
BLUSH
  • MAC Mineralise Skinfinish in Stereo Rose
  • MAC Marilyn Monroe Blush in The Perfect Cheek
  • Napoleon Perdis Contour Palette (brown contour only)
EYES
  • Bare Minerals Eyeshadow in Drama
  • Bare Minerals Eyeshadow in Celestine
  • Napoleon Perdis Colour Disc in Queen of the Night
  • Napoleon Perdis Loose Eye Dust in Mosaic Gold
  • Napoleon Perdis Mesmer-Eyes Mascara
  • Napoleon Perdis China Doll Gel Liner in Equinox
  • Eyebrows: Illamasqua Eyebrow Cake in Gaze used wet with Illamasqua Sealing Gel (I'm trying something new! lol)
  • Lashes: Lash Republic's 'The Hunter'
LIPS
  • MAC Lipstick in RiRi Woo
The lippy is the LE Riri Hearts MAC Collaboration... I bought it because I got sucked in but I must say I was throughly impressed! The colour is really nice and it wore REALLY well and it didn't bleed! I am usually really clumsy with red lipstick but I didn't end up getting this one everywhere. It is a matte finish but it doesn't feel overly drying which is a huge plus! If you are Aussie, it's still available on the MAC website, otherwise, there is a second release in June (I think it is... actually that's quite soon!!).

FOTD: Anniversary Dinner

Hello,

It's been a busy ol' week for me (which is why it's been a bit light on with postings, so my apologies for that!). On Wednesday, the Fiance and I went out for a 4 year anniversary dinner! (no, the dinner didn't go for four years! haha... I wish!). I did a reasonably simple FOTD for the occasion but I was really happy with it and it was very much liked by the other half!

I used the following products:

FACE
  • Napoleon Perdis Auto Pilot Primer
  • MAC Studio Fix Fluid in NC15
  • Napoleon Perdis Camera Finish Powder in N2
BLUSH
  • Sleek Blush by 3 in Lace (Middle only)
  • NARS Blush in Seduction
EYES
  • Bare Minerals Eyeshadow in Drama
  • MAC Paint Pot in Blackground
  • Napoleon Perdis Loose Eye Dust in Mosaic Gold
  • Napoleon Perdis Mesmer-Eyes Mascara
  • Napoleon Perdis China Doll Gel Liner in Equinox
  • Illamasqua Precision Ink in Abyss
  • Eyebrows: Illamasqua Eyebrow Cake in Vehement
  • Lashes: Ardell Beauties (I had previously washed/soaked them so they are a bit straighter than normal!)
LIPS
I went for a pale lip due to my bright/bold eyes (and also because I was less likely to end up with my lippy all over my face during dinner... It has happened with brighter colours!). The best part about it was that it was pretty quick to do! WOOHOO! (always keen for a bit of time saving!)

I hope this serves as a bit of inspiration when you are next getting ready for a night out!

PM'S TOP FIVE: FACE ESSENTIALS

Hello again,

Tonight is another installment of PM'S TOP FIVE (my previous editions have been on Illamasqua and MAC if you've missed them!). Tonight's focus is a quick round up of my five favourite face essentials - these are the things I consider a MUST when doing my daily makeup!
My favourite Face Essentials
Kryolan TV Paint Stick (I use colour NB1)
Formulated for TV usage, this product has fantastic coverage! Its main purpose is foundation but I actually use it as concealer, because it's one of the few things that actually does a decent job of covering my dark circles! I also use it on my eyes as a base for my eyeshadow, so it's going on to even colour! (not my splotchy eyeballs!).
(p.s. I have previously raved on about TV paint stick in my Bargain Makeup-ing Post!)

Illamasqua Eyebrow Cake (I use colour Vehement)
Filling in eyebrows is a must! It really finishes your face off and makes your overall look more polished! I simply use this eyebrow cake dry with an angled brush, but you can also use it with a sealer gel, wet, for added definition!
(p.s. This Eyebrow Cake has also made it to my top five Illamasqua... What a handy little thing it is!)

Kryolan Translucent Powder (TL1)
I use Translucent Powder over the TV paintstick to set the foundation when I do my eyes. However, It could also be used for an all-over powder (nice and versatile this one!). Translucent powders help to set your foundation without adding any extra colour to your face! If you struggle to find a good match for powder, translucent powder could be a good option for you!

Illamasqua Medium Pencil in Hex
I am in love with Hex pencil! It's a nude colour (like an actual pale nude, not every other makeup company's definition of nude lip liner... which is actually brown!). It's actually a really good match for my skin tone! (I definitely got lucky there!) Anyway, I use it around the edges of my lips to stop my lippy bleeding (and I use it instead of co-ordinating colour ones because a) I'm lazy, b) It goes with everything and c) I don't have to be accurate). You could even wear it alone for a nude lip if you wanted!

Mascara (I use Napoleon Perdis' Mesmer-Eyes Waterproof)
Mascara, no matter what brand you use, is a mascara is essential! Mascara helps to define your lashes and make you look more awake and with it! The one I use (NP Mesmer-Eyes) I like because it has a plastic comb-style brush, rather than one with heaps of bristles (and considering I frequently stab myself in the eye... I feel like I'm less likely to do damage with blunt plastic!)

I hope this helps next time you are looking for some face essentials!

Limited Edition DUPE TEST: MAC's Ronnie Red

Hello,

Have you ever gawked over a soon-to-be released limited edition product only to miss out when it was released?

Well, lament no more! My series of "Limited Edition" dupe tests aim to help you get through your grief with some suitable (dupable) alternatives!

On the radar tonight is MAC's Ronnie Red from the Archie's Girls collection. This collection was much anticipated and sold out like HOTCAKES online! (the hottest hotcakes you could ever think of). I made a special trip (well, we made a day of it) down to my closest MAC Pro store where I had all my lustings on hold.

Ronnie Red is a bright matte red. Beauty blogger Temptalia (www.temptalia.com) gives it a big thumbs up and describes it as an "incredibly long-wearing red" (I would put my two cents in but naughty me hasn't worn it yet! Whoops).

I have chosen Ronnie Red as the focus for the dupe test, due to the popularity and hype of the collection. There are some other LE MAC's that I will be swatching for comparison (which I know isn't 100% helpful but they were in my tin and you might be lucky enough to have one!) but I feel Ronnie Red was the more suitable focal point for this test!

I have dug through my collection and found nine potentially suitable matches for Ronnie Red. So here we go:

(L-R: Luxembourg, Dragon Girl, Charmed I'm Sure, Aphrodite, Red Passion, Ronnie Red, S.T.O.P, Tramp, Retrofuturist, Absolute Power)
I will compare the following to Ronnie Red:
- NARS Luxembourg: Suprisingly, I would say this is the closest of the lot. It has the pinkish base like RR, but still plays red. It is a fraction more pink but you're really splitting hairs to tell them apart in majority of types of lighting! (I'm pretty sure the men in your life wouldn't notice!). The finishes, however, are a tad different. Luxembourg is glossier, but does dry off (if that's the right term) to a more matte finish. (P.S. I have put Luxembourg "Under the Microscope" here)
- NARS Dragon Girl: Also reasonably close but it's more matte and slightly less pink than RR.
- MAC Charmed I'm Sure: The finish is the same but CIS is darker, with a more a blue rather than pink in RR. This one was also a LE.
- Napoleon Perdis Aphrodite: Not that close. A deep, blue based red and no pinky undertone like RR.
- L'Oreal Colour Riche 297 Red Passion: Closer to NP Aphrodite than RR but a tad brighter than Aphrodite.
- Ka'oir S.T.O.P: Not even close. It was closer in the tube. I was expecting it to be much brighter bit it's kind of like a haemolysed blood red (there's the nerd in me coming out again!).
- Illamasqua Tramp: A more yellow based and deeper red than RR.
- Lime Crime Retrofuturist: Brighter and less pink than RR.
- MAC Absolute Power: Another LE. It's the same toning as RR but is a bit darker.

So which should you pick? In terms of closest to RR, Luxembourg is very close but throws more pink, Dragon Girl is also very close but is more matte and throws more red. Absolute Power (another MAC LE) is also similiar but is darker. Both Dragon Girl and Luxembourg would be suitable subsitutes if happened to miss out. If you find mattes too drying for your lips, I would lean more toward Luxembourg too!

I hope this helps if you happened to miss out on Ronnie Red.
Happy dupe spotting!
Love,
Your PM xx

p.s. I've now added labels to all my posts, so if you are in the web view you can find other posts in similar categories! x

SWATCH FEST: Napoleon Perdis DeVine Goddess Lipsticks

Hello,

I thought I would follow up from my Lime Crime Lipstick Collection and post my Napoleon Perdis one, as I know some of you are curious for swatches (plus, they are extremely hard to find on the net so if you stumble across this, I hope this helps for your choosing!).

I have 10 NP lipsticks, but only 6 are currently listed on the website. (I know one old one was a GWP, but I'm sure you would be able to get the other 3 from a NP stockist if you were that keen on getting them!).

I'll start with product stats:
Weight: 4.2gms (very generous for a lipstick!)
Price: AUD$35 (a modest price point too given the size!)

Be wary though, as some of the brighter colours can bleed, so a lip liner is a MUST!! (I hate wearing lip liner I can never do a decent job. My latest trick is cheating and using a nude one and just colour in the outside of my lips! It still works quite well!). I wore Calypso without liner one day, and yes it bled (embarrasing!), so I haven't reached for it again (I probably should with the lip liner trick hey?). To their credit though, I have not found the formula very drying, which is a plus! (a good lip care regime is still recommended of course!)

Now for swatches!
The hard to find shades:
(L-R: Artemis, Harmonia, Calypso, Hess)
(L-R: Artemis, Harmonia, Calypso, Hess)
Artemis: A sheer-er glossy pink. This shade was in a GWP a while ago. It is not as opaque as some of the other colours in the collection.
Harmonia: A dirty coral. It is reasonably opaque and has a slight matte finish (read: it's not as glossy as Artemis). I forgot I had this and I think I'll be reaching for it over winter when brights aren't the go to like they are in summer!
Calypso: A berry pink/red. It is a deep colour but it is also quite bright too! (if that makes sense!)
Hess: A brown-y pink nude with a gold shimmer. I am actually quite suprised this is no longer part of the current range. It's a great every day colour!

The current range:
(L-R: SMP, Nymphe, Atlanta, Xenia, Aphrodite, Hara)

(L-R: SMP, Nymphe, Atlanta, Xenia, Aphrodite, Hara)
SMP: A pink based nude with gold shimmer. This is more actually a bit more brown than Hess. This is another great everyday colour.
Nymphe: A mid rosy pink. This one has a glossy type finish like Artemis.
Atlanta: A teracotta brown with a hint of orange. I am still a bit confused as to why I bought this. I think I was a bit mislead by online swatches.
Xenia: A pink toned red. If you feel red is a bit harsh for you, or you are not quite confident to pull it off, this is a good alternative!
Aphrodite: A blue-based true red. This is a nice, glamorous red! This one takes confidence!
Hara: ORANGE! Woohoo! I LOVE this one! I am a huge fan of orange lippy (and for those wondering, this is a smidgeon darker than MAC's Morange). It also has a slight matte finish.

My favourites from my collection would be Hess and Hara! (Harmonia would be closely behind!)

If there are any other brands/colour stories you wish to see, please let me know! This blog has the reader at heart (it's not just an outlet for my love of cosmetics!) so if there is a demand, (like there was for this post!) I'm happy to try and make things happen!

Happy shopping!
Love,
Your PM xx
