I used the following products:

DUPE TEST: Lime Crime Babette

Greetings!

For this edition of the dupe test, I will be seeking formidable comparisons for Lime Crime's Babette. I have already reviewed Babette and you can read what I think of it here
Anyway, Let's get straight into it:

The contenders!
Up for comparison:
- MAC Betty Bright
- Illamasqua Obey
- Lime Crime Coquette
- Illamasqua Sonnet
- Nars Lodhi
- OCC Lip Tar Hush

(L-R: Hush, Lodhi, Betty Bright, Sonnet, Obey, Babette, Coquette)
Let's compare:
- Hush: Browner than Babette
- Lodhi: Brighter and more red than Babette
- Betty Bright: Similar tone, but pinker than Babette
- Sonnet: Paler and more orange than Babette (also a matte finish)
- Obey: Similar tone but more Orange (also a matte finish)
- Coquette: Browner than Babette (this was here as a comparison!)

The Verdict: No real dupes here but Obey is probably the closest. If you want something similar but less bright, Hush could also be a suitable alternative. Not many Babette worthy dupes in my stash it seems! (Sorry!)

Note: Hush is very similar to Coquette but a bit more pink! If you mix both Coquette and Babette together, it brings up a similar colour to Hush!

Where to get them (in Australia):
Hush: lipstickrepublic.com.au (AUD$18 for 10ml)
Lodhi: meccacosmetica.com.au (AUD$39 for 2.2gms)
Betty Bright: This was a LE colour (sorry!)
Sonnet: myer.com.au (AUD$25 for 4gms)
Obey: myer.com.au (AUD$25 for 4gms)
Coquette: lipstickrepublic.com.au (AUD$21 for 3.5gms)

Are there any dupe tests you would like to see on the blog?

DUPE TEST: Illamasqua 'Excite' vs Sleek 'Lace' Blush by 3!

Today's edition of the DUPE TEST is comparing Illamasqua 'Excite' and the Sleek 'Lace' palette.

Let's get straight into it!

Top: Sleek 'Lace'
Bottom: Illamasqua 'Excite'
In the pan, the blush on the right of the sleek pan is the closest to the Illamasqua blush. However it's not quite the same story swatched...

Top Three Swatches: Sleek 'Lace'
Bottom: Illamasqua 'Excite'
In the swatch, the blush on the left of the Sleek pan is closest to Excite. However, Excite is a touch redder. Though it is more intensely pigmented and this is where it could be getting the red hit.

The verdict: Pretty darn close!

Weight:
Illamasqua: 4.5gms
Sleek: 20gms over 3 colours

Price:
Illamasqua: AUD$28
Sleek: AUD$14.95

These are great colours for summer. I look at them now and screw my face up all "What was I thinking?!", but I was in love with orange blush in the warmer weather! (Lets face it, pink can be a bit ho hum after a while!)

Sleek is definitely a good buy, and you get three colours in one palette - great if want some variety! However, I do lean towards the Illamasqua one in terms of quality (the Sleek ones are a bit more chalky in comparison). So, even if you only want the one colour, the Illamasqua is still a good investment - it is very competitively priced compared to other  'high-end' blushes in the market!

Ulitmately, you need to weigh up what would be best for your needs!

Where to buy:
Illamasqua: From selected Myer counters in Australia, www.myer.com.au or www.illamasqua.com (they do ship internationally too!)
Sleek: Selected online Australian retailers such as www.lipstickrepublic.com.au or from www.sleek.com (if you're international).

Are there any dupes you would like to see compared on Polished Makeup? Drop me a line and I'll see if I can oblige!

DUPE TEST: Pale/Baby Pink Lipsticks feat. Maybelline Pink Pop

Hello,

This edition of the Dupe Test features baby pink lipsticks. After posting my Maybelline Vivids Review, I have wanted to get to work on finding lippies that these bargain tubes of awesomeness are dupes for! So essentially, this post is a comparison of a bunch of lippies to Maybelline's Pink Pop to see which is close (and dupe worthy).

Baby (or pale) pink lippies aren't something that I am stopped in the street for. I generally turn to brighter coloured hues (fuschia pinks, purples and corals). Nonetheless, they are a good choice if you wear soft makeup and want to wear a lipstick that is more exciting than nude!

Lets get to it! Today's subjects:
- Melt 'Darling'
- Illamasqua 'Plunge'
- Maybelline 'Pink Pop' (of course!)
- MAC 'Saint Germain'
- Lime Crime 'Great Pink Planet'
- Coloured Raine 'Confection'
- OCC 'Lovecraft'
- OCC 'Digitalis'

These are all 'cool' pinks (i.e blue based pinks rather than yellow based pinks).

L-R: Melt Darling, Illamasqua Plunge, Maybelline Pink Pop, MAC Saint Germain,  Lime Crime Great Pink Planet, Coloured Raine Confection
OCC Lip Tars: Lovecraft (Top) and Digitalis (Bottom)

L-R: Digitalis, Lovecraft, Darling, Plunge, Pink Pop, Saint Germain,  Great Pink Planet, Confection
(Photo taken with flash)
In both photos, Pink Pop is 5th in from the left.

L-R: Digitalis, Lovecraft, Darling, Plunge, Pink Pop, Saint Germain,  Great Pink Planet, Confection
(Photo taken under a cool light)

- Digitalis: Paler and dirtier than PP.
- Lovecraft: The tiniest fraction purpler than PP, plus it has silver sparkle.
- Darling: Matte and more purple based than PP.
- Plunge: Paler and matte and marginally more yellow than PP.
- Saint Germain: Paler than PP but of similar tone.
- Great Pink Planet: Paler and grayer than PP.
- Confection: A bit deeper and marginally more purple than PP.

The verdict: No real dupes here (sorry!) BUT Lovecraft, Pink Pop and Confection would be suitable substitutes for one another (in other words you probably don't need them all). Either way, it's good to see some swatches!
Also note worthy: Great Pink Planet is a bit greyer than Saint Germain, but if you are trying to be a makeup minimalist you won't need both! (My personal pick of the two would be Saint Germain because it's brighter, but if you're budget conscious go for Great Pink Planet!).

Size & Cost:

- Melt 'Darling': USD$19 (can't find a weight) - note: they don't ship international anymore!
- Illamasqua 'Plunge': AUD$25 for 4gms
- Maybelline 'Pink Pop' (of course!) - AUD$16.95 for 4.2gms
- MAC 'Saint Germain' - AUD$36 for 3gms
- Lime Crime 'Great Pink Planet' - AUD$21 for 3.5gms
- Coloured Raine 'Confection' - USD$13 for 3.5gms
- OCC 'Lovecraft' - AUD$18 for 10ml
- OCC 'Digitalis' - AUD$18 for 10ml

I'm actually quite glad these are all a bit different!

DUPE TEST: MAC Royal Sunset vs Illamasqua Tremble

Good evening,
While I'm still on my blogging roll (this is post #6 for today!), I thought I would treat you all to another dupe test. I'll have a break from lipstick and focus on blush!

This edition puts MAC's Royal Sunset against Illamasqua's Tremble. Royal Sunset was released with MAC's All About Orange Collection and was one of the first items to sell out! As soon as I had seen swatches of it, I instantly thought of Illamasqua's Tremble. Illamasqua's Tremble is one of my favourite blushes and was featured in my Illamasqua Top Five.

Tremble (Left) and Royal Sunset (Right)

Tremble (Left) and Royal Sunset (Right)
Royal Sunset is described as a soft cool peach and Tremble is described as soft lilac pink. I don't know where the lilac really comes into it, but Tremble is certainly alot more pinker than Royal Sunset. Royal Sunset looks like a pale pink blush in comparison. Definitely cool but don't really know where the peach is hiding (it's very faint!).

Size:
Illamasqua: 4.5 grams
MAC: 6 grams

Price:
Illamasqua: AUD $26
MAC: AUD $41

The Illamasqua is better value both in initial outlay and cost per gram ($5.78/g vs $6.83/g).
VERDICT: Not as close I was expecting. If you are not that fussy and want a really good versatile blush, Illamasqua Tremble would be a great substitute.
Are there any other blush dupes that you know of?

FOTD: Illamasqua Speckled Liner

Hello,

Today I am sharing a FOTD with you. Since it was released with the I'Mperfection collection, I have admired Illamasqua's Speckled Eyeliner technique. Until now, I have not attempted it as I have not been overly confident with eyeliner. Looking at this (dodgy phone) photo I would say this is one of my best eyeliner attempts yet!

I used the following products:

FACE
  • Illamasqua Matte Primer
  • Illamasqua Skinbase Foundation in #6
  • Napoleon Perdis Camera Finish Powder in N2
BLUSH
  • MAC Mineralise Skinfinish in Stereo Rose
EYES
  • MAC Eyeshadow in Satin Taupe (Crease)
  • Bare Minerals Eyeshadow in Nude Beach (Lid)
  • Napoleon Perdis Loose Eye Dust in Mosaic Gold (Highlight)
  • Napoleon Perdis Mesmer-Eyes Mascara
  • Napoleon Perdis China Doll Gel Liner in Equinox
  • Illamasqua Precision Ink in Scribe
  • Eyebrows: Illamasqua Eyebrow Cake in Gaze
  • Lashes: Lash Republic's 'The Hunter' (these are definitely my favourite lashes!)
LIPS
  • MAC Lipstick in Embrace Me
The key to this look is the Precision Inks in Abyss (Black) and Scribe (White)! If you are keen, you can play around and use different colours (gold instead of white for example!). Either way, I feel liquid eyeliners would work best! (for the spots at least anyway!). Because the liner is reasonably simple, I paired it with a bright lip for a bit more interest.

There is a great tutorial for Speckled Eyeliner on the Illamasqua website which you can view here if you are interested!

Have you tried the Speckled Eyeliner? Do you want to?

UNDER THE MICROSCOPE: Illamasqua Lipstick in 'Esp'

This edition of 'Under the Microscope' is focusing on Illamasqua's new-ish lipstick in 'Esp', released in the Paranormal collection!

Esp is described as a 'vivid violet with a matte finish'. I also feel it's got a little bit of a violety-blue sheen hiding in there as well! According to the lady at the Illamasqua counter (where I bought Esp from) it is also glows under UV. I now have a UV torch to test this out and I can report that it does glow a bit (but it hides amongst the UV light so not much point in taking a photo), however the glow isn't enough to punch you in the face like other UV lippies (in other words, don't buy it solely because it glows).

Illamasqua Lipstick in Esp
Esp Swatch
These photos lean a little blue, but it is a really pretty colour as you can see! It's really bright and does have a glow about it.

Unfortunately, application wise, this doesn’t tick the boxes for me. The colour is beautiful but it went on rather patchy. I am rather fussy over lipsticks and if the pigmentation is not intense and even I find myself disappointed. This was one of those cases. It was an intense colour, but I couldn't get it even. From a distance, it would probably be less of an issue, but I am really pedantic about having my face presentable (when I put one on that is!).

I am really disappointed that this is not up to Illamasqua's usual standard. One thing I have noticed, is that the formula is different from other lipsticks in their range. I don’t know if they have permanently changed the formula (I asked one of the assistants when I was last at an Illamasqua counter and she couldn’t tell me). Posture and Esp (both new) have the same formula, which are both different to Kontrol (an older colour). I have also noticed, that purples tend to be a problematic colour. I have MAC’s Heroine, (another bright purple) which is also a pretty colour but is also disappointing in terms of wear.

This one really does perplex me because everyone I see it on it looks amazing but I am yet to make it work properly for me. If you somehow get it to work, it is a beautiful colour!

The going rate is AUD$25 for 4gms (quite reasonable value wise!).

You can purchase Illamasqua from www.illamasqua.com or in Australia from selected Myer counters or www.myer.com.au.

Do you have problems with purple lipsticks? Have you tried Esp? Have you got it to work?!

Until next time,
Love,

FOTD: Fancy Function!

Hello,

Last week I went to a function and I thought I would share the makeup look that I did for the occasion! (Sorry they are dodgy phone photos but you'll still get the idea!)

My dress was orange lace over beige so I didn't want to go too gun-ho with colour! I chose a co-ordinating bright lip because I like to be matchy like that! haha. The end result made me feel very glam!

I used the following products:

FACE
BLUSH
  • NARS Blush in Deep Throat
  • MAC Mineralize Skin Finish in Stereo Rose (on apples of cheeks only)
  • Napoleon Perdis Contour Palette (brown contour only)
EYES
  • Bare Minerals Eyeshadow in Nude Beach (applied damp with MAC Fix+)
  • Sleek i-Divine in Original (brown-y colours used)
  • Napoleon Perdis Loose Eye Dust in Mosaic Gold
  • Napoleon Perdis Mesmer-Eyes Mascara
  • Napoleon Perdis China Doll Gel Liner in Equinox
  • MAC Pearlglide Eyeliner in Black Swan
  • Eyebrows: Illamasqua Eyebrow Cake in Vehement
  • Lashes: Lash Republic's 'The Hunter'
LIPS
  • MAC Lipstick in Ablaze
There you have it! I hope this serves as inspiration next time you are having a night out!

FOTD: Glam With Red Lips

Hello,

Another FOTD from last weekend here! I felt like going glam last sunday and wore a pretty dress to match! Once again, it's dodgy picture quality (thanks to the phone!).

I used the following products:

FACE
  • Illamasqua Matte Primer
  • Illamasqua Skinbase Foundation in #6
  • Illamasqua Skinbase Foundation in #1 (for blending into neck)
  • Napoleon Perdis Camera Finish Powder in N2
BLUSH
  • MAC Mineralise Skinfinish in Stereo Rose
  • MAC Marilyn Monroe Blush in The Perfect Cheek
  • Napoleon Perdis Contour Palette (brown contour only)
EYES
  • Bare Minerals Eyeshadow in Drama
  • Bare Minerals Eyeshadow in Celestine
  • Napoleon Perdis Colour Disc in Queen of the Night
  • Napoleon Perdis Loose Eye Dust in Mosaic Gold
  • Napoleon Perdis Mesmer-Eyes Mascara
  • Napoleon Perdis China Doll Gel Liner in Equinox
  • Eyebrows: Illamasqua Eyebrow Cake in Gaze used wet with Illamasqua Sealing Gel (I'm trying something new! lol)
  • Lashes: Lash Republic's 'The Hunter'
LIPS
  • MAC Lipstick in RiRi Woo
The lippy is the LE Riri Hearts MAC Collaboration... I bought it because I got sucked in but I must say I was throughly impressed! The colour is really nice and it wore REALLY well and it didn't bleed! I am usually really clumsy with red lipstick but I didn't end up getting this one everywhere. It is a matte finish but it doesn't feel overly drying which is a huge plus! If you are Aussie, it's still available on the MAC website, otherwise, there is a second release in June (I think it is... actually that's quite soon!!).

SWATCH FEST: Illamasqua Precision Ink

Today's swatch fest will be on my collection of Illamasqua Precision Ink Liners.

The Illamasqua liners have received a lot of attention of late for their new 'Speckled Eye Liner' technique (if you are wondering what it's like you can view it here!). I haven't tried the speckles yet (though after looking at that tutorial I do want to get my hands on scribe...) but I have been keen on their Precision Ink for quite a while!
Precision Ink Outer Packaging
Precision Ink Brush
Their packaging is plain black with cream print (reasonably standard for Illamasqua). The brush is a semi-flexible (at the end) felt tip.

Precision Ink Swatches (L-R): Alchemy, Abyss, Havoc

Alchemy: A gold glitter. This one isn't fully opaque. Like wisdom (the current gold liner available), this one would be awesome paired with black. It would also make a nice take on the 'speckled eye-liner' trend! (Also, I didn't realise till I was halfway through writing this, but it seems you can't get it any more! Sorry!)
Abyss: A jet black. It's opaque too! (Some liquid liners are notorious for being a bit transparent!). One thing I like about it is that it has a sort of shiny finish (not wax floor shiny, but shiny enough to set it apart from any dark eye makeup you may be wearing).
Havoc: A dark purple. It's almost brown, and you'd probably be more inclined to call it brown over purple if you didn't actually know it was purple, but there is a definite purply tone in there. Dark enough to not look silly but it makes a nice change from black!

This has to be one of the best eyeliners I have come across. Ever. The formula is fabulous. It actually stays put! It won’t start running if you start running! YAY! (Other liners I’ve worn are much easier to smudge if you rub your eyes). Yes, I do find the brush a bit tedious at times, but that can easily be avoided (just dip your favourite eyeliner brush in instead!). The only downside to the formula is that it can be a bit stingy if you get it in the wrong spot (so if you have sensitive eyes be careful!).
If you are in the market for a new liquid eyeliner (and your eyes aren’t super sensitive) then I definitely recommend you give this one a go!
This product also comes in white (Scribe), antiqued gold (Wisdom) and an opalescent nude (Glister).
It costs AUD$27 for 1.8mL (it is quite pricey when you think about how much you get but a little goes a long way!).

A nifty little trick is that the ink's can even be used as a nail art pen! (Awesome if you want to smash some nail art on the go!)
You can purchase Illamasqua Precision Ink (and other Illamasqua products) from www.illamasqua.com or in Australia from selected Myer counters or www.myer.com.au

Have you tried the Illamasqua Precision Ink?

FAVOURITES: My April Picks!

Hello,

Tonight I will share with you my favourite products for the month of April! I was tagged on Instagram to show my favourite products (if you are following me @polishedmakeup then you have already had a sneak peek!) so here they are!:

My April Favourites

Illamasqua Blush in Tremble
I love Illamasqua Blushes because they are a reasonable price point (AUD$28) and you get a reasonable amount (4.5gms). They have a great colour range (including a few bold ones!) and are also very pigmented but still easily blendable. Tremble is such a versatile colour. It is pink but you can get away with wearing it with peachy colours! It's also one that you can't overdo and does blend out nicely! I love Tremble so much that it made my post on my Top 5 Illamasqua Products! This is definitely one colour I reach for a lot!

MAC Blush in Mocha
This is another colour I reach for quite a bit, especially when I want more subdued blush (because it's a bit darker than Tremble). I don't own many MAC blushes but this one I am really happy with! It's like a nude/dusty pink (it's a bit like Illamasqua's Naked Rose for those Illamasqua fans playing along out there!). It's not bright but still quite flattering. Like Tremble, this is another one I love so much that it made my Top 5 MAC post!
OCC Loose Colour Concentrate in Wasabi
OCC's Loose Colour Concentrates have quickly earnt a place in my heart for their awesome colours and awesome value! (They are only AUD$14 for 2.5gms! Yes, $14!!! Awesome!). I have a nice little collection happening (I do plan to swatch it for you!) and one of my favourites at the moment is Wasabi! I am loving the bright Chatreuse/Lime Greens at the moment! (This will probably die off a bit in winter though lol). It's very pigmented and worn with a primer/base you get a bright colour that stays put for hours!

Nars Satin Lip Pencil in Luxembourg
I had already given Luxembourg a review, which you can read here. I was throughly impressed with it, especially for something that's a satin finish (as matte's usually have the longer wear time!). The colour is also great! I thought it was a really deep pink, but silly me didn't realise that it was actually red until I swatched it with a bunch of other red lipsticks for a dupe test! Clever me! I highly recommend it if you are in the market for a new red/deep pink! (I had also ordered Lohdi and Yu, which have arrived! Review in the near future! I'll add it to the list...)

Lime Crime Velvetines in Suedeberry
I looooove Suedeberry. It really does have the velvet finish claimed and it STAYS PUT! I was also pleasantly suprised with Suedeberry's colour too... It's a coral! This makes me rather happy due to my fondness of corals! This is a great everyday colour too! I have already reviewed both Velvetines on my blog and you can read my thoughts on them here!

Illamasqua Lipstick in Eurydice
I am quite fond of Illamasqua lippies for their awesome colours and staying powder! They are matte and wear like a coat of armour on your lips! They barely budge! However, the downside to them is that they can feel quite drying on your lips... particularly if they aren't in the best condition! Any imperfections will show up so scrub up before wearing! Eurydice is a bright fuschia pink! This one is not for the faint of heart and really packs a punch!

OCC Lip Tar in Anime
I LOVE OCC Lip Tars because the colour is so intense and it only takes a tiny amount of colour for maximum effect! They feel light as a feather to wear too! (I do have quite a little collection and I will get around to swatching them for you soon!). The only downside (for me) is that becuase they are so light to wear I feel like I'm going to smear them all up my face! (that is mostly because I'm a clumsy pants!). Anime is a vibrant neon pink! It is so intense and amazing! However, it stays put really well when worn with Eurydice (both of these made the list because I wore them together and it was such an amazing combo!).
Sleek Blush by 3 in Lace
These are a bit on the powdery side, but for 20gms of blush for AUD$15 you really can't go wrong! The pigmentation is still really good considering! (Really good!). The Lace palette has a bright orange, a gold shimmery pink and a bright coral/red. You can (just!) see me sporting the middle one in my Anniversary Dinner FOTD! (I have swatched this on Instagram if you are interested).

Do you agree with my picks? What products are you loving at the moment?

FOTD: Anniversary Dinner

Hello,

It's been a busy ol' week for me (which is why it's been a bit light on with postings, so my apologies for that!). On Wednesday, the Fiance and I went out for a 4 year anniversary dinner! (no, the dinner didn't go for four years! haha... I wish!). I did a reasonably simple FOTD for the occasion but I was really happy with it and it was very much liked by the other half!

I used the following products:

FACE
  • Napoleon Perdis Auto Pilot Primer
  • MAC Studio Fix Fluid in NC15
  • Napoleon Perdis Camera Finish Powder in N2
BLUSH
  • Sleek Blush by 3 in Lace (Middle only)
  • NARS Blush in Seduction
EYES
  • Bare Minerals Eyeshadow in Drama
  • MAC Paint Pot in Blackground
  • Napoleon Perdis Loose Eye Dust in Mosaic Gold
  • Napoleon Perdis Mesmer-Eyes Mascara
  • Napoleon Perdis China Doll Gel Liner in Equinox
  • Illamasqua Precision Ink in Abyss
  • Eyebrows: Illamasqua Eyebrow Cake in Vehement
  • Lashes: Ardell Beauties (I had previously washed/soaked them so they are a bit straighter than normal!)
LIPS
I went for a pale lip due to my bright/bold eyes (and also because I was less likely to end up with my lippy all over my face during dinner... It has happened with brighter colours!). The best part about it was that it was pretty quick to do! WOOHOO! (always keen for a bit of time saving!)

I hope this serves as a bit of inspiration when you are next getting ready for a night out!
Love,
Your PM x
